MSRJ 2020 Leadership Transition Information

Dear MSRJ Members, As our Transition Meeting is approaching over the next couple of months, we need to make preparations for the new Executive Board for the 2020-2021 year. We will be holding elections to determine the leadership positions, and this email is for anyone who is interested in running for an E-board position! Being a part of the MSRJ board is a great leadership opportunity, has been very fun, and has come up on CV and residency interviews often! Here are the available positions, with descriptions of each position at the end of this page: M4 Exec Editor M3 Exec Editor SE Coordinator JE Coordinator Treasurer PR Officer Secretary Fundraising Chair PubMed/OJS Officer If you are interested in running, please email me: kathleen.louis@msrj.chm.msu.edu with a brief statement of interest, and why you would be a good candidate (~1 paragraph). We will send this information out to all members once we receive all of the submissions. We are asking that you respond by March 20th, so that we can have time to set up the election poll and have results by the Transition Meeting. If anyone has questions, please feel free to email me -Kathleen     Elected Positions M4 Executive Editor Eligibility: Any current M3 who will be an M4 in the coming school year. Responsible for overseeing and providing guidance to Public Relations Officer. Provide guidance to and oversee the Elective Team regarding recruitment of new members. Serve with, and at the discretion of, the Executive Editor in Chief with respect to identifying and training leadership for the following year, including the 3rd year executive editor. Perform executive reviews on submitted articles to determine if they will advance to peer review process. Receive reports on article progress and issues on the Senior Editor level from Lead Senior Editor. Assign articles to Senior and Junior Editors following Executive reviews. M3 Executive Editor Eligibility: Any current M2 who will be an M3 in the coming year who has a desire to serve as Executive Editor in Chief in their 4th year. Responsible for overall management and supervision of Reviewer Management including online training article, letters of good standing, access to OJS training article. Receive reports from Lead Junior Editor regarding article progress and issues on the Junior Editor level from Lead Junior Editor. Responsible to assist EE-in-Chief and Tech Team with articles in preparation for the following year. Responsible to assist Executive Editor in Chief with tasks related to managing the MSRJ. Perform executive reviews on submitted articles to determine if they will advance to peer review process. Senior Editor Coordinator Eligibility: Must be Former SE, will still be SE Act as intermediary between Executive Editors and Senior Editors Assist Senior Editors with issues they encounter during the review process escalate issue to EEs if needed Maintain SE demographics (where are SEs from? 2019-2020 Executive Board

MSRJ is proud to announce its 2019-2020 Executive Board members!  Congratulations to Kathleen Louis-Gray, Eve Pourzan, Michael Dryden, Ninette Musili, Maria Rich, Antara Afrin, Christopher Dextras, and Jacob Purcell for being elected to their respective positions.  They are working hard to publish evidence-based and peer-reviewed research submitted by medical students across the globe.  We are excited to see how MSRJ will grow under their supervision! Meet our staff: Kathleen Louis-Gray – Executive Editor-In-Chief – is a 4th year medical student at MSU College of Human Medicine at the Traverse City Campus. She earned her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Michigan State University, and studied thalamic synaptic plasticity in a rat model using electrophysiological techniques. She is currently in the Rural Community Health Program in Traverse City. There, she is involved in research regarding diet interventions and polysubstance use during pregnancy in a rural population. She has been an active member of MSRJ since 2016, helped to organize the MSRJ Elective, served as the M3 Executive Editor in the past. She is interested in neurology, and would like to strongly integrate clinical research with her future specialty. Eve Pourzan – M4 Executive Editor –  is a 3rd year medical student and is a prior 2017-2018 MSRJ Elective Organizer, and 2018-2019 Junior Editor Coordinator. She received her Bachelor’s in Politics from UCSC, and worked for the Michigan Legislature before pursuing medicine. Eve has lab experience investigating cell signaling in estrogen-positive breast cancer and systemic sclerosis. She is interested in pursuing anesthesiology. Michael Dryden – M3 Executive Editor – is a 3rd year medical student at MSU College of Human Medicine heading to the Traverse City campus in the coming months. He grew up in Petoskey, Michigan before heading to the University of Michigan where he completed his B.S. in Neuroscience. He then attended Eastern Michigan University where he received his M.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology with a focus in Behavioral Neuroscience. While there he studied mouse olfactory behavior and olfactory bulb plasticity while developing new equipment and methodology. He is currently interested in both Emergency Medicine and Neurology, and when not studying or on the wards, you will most likely find him outdoors either riding his bikes or spending time on the water. Ninette Musili – Senior Editor Coordinator – Ninette is a rising 3rd year medical student at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. She grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan and earned her B.S. in Biomolecular Science from the University of Michigan. She is currently interested in maternal health and child disparities. Maria Rich – Junior Editor Coordinator – Maria is a 2nd year medical student at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. She grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan and received her B.A. in Biology from Kalamazoo College where she enjoyed studying abroad in Quito, Ecuador and playing varsity soccer. Prior to starting medical school, she worked as a Clinical Research Coordinator with the BeatCC Pediatric Oncology Research Team. At this point in her medical education, she is excited about pediatrics, genetics, and palliative care. Introducing the new 2017 – 2018 editorial staff for the MSRJ! We are thrilled to welcome many new junior editors to our experienced MSRJ team. The journal has been making exciting new changes with the start of e-publication and we look forward to another productive year of publishing, editing, and supporting medical student research efforts around the world! 2017-2018 Editorial Staff Executive Editors Danny Yau, Executive Editor-in-Chief, is a fourth year medical student at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine. He completed his B.S. in Microbial Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. His previous contributions to MSRJ include the ePublications feature, and previously serving as the M3 Executive Editor. For the 2017 year, he is focused on sustainability of the organization, as well as further establishing MSRJ’s presence in the medical research community. His current interest is in Emergency Medicine, and he recently presented at the MSU FAME Community Research Forum on Geospatial Analysis between Neighborhood Characteristics and Bystander CPR Initiation Rates. Kyle Hildebrandt, M4 Executive Editor, is a fourth year medical student at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine. He completed his B.S. in Biomedical Laboratory Science at Michigan State University as a recipient of the Alumni Distinguished Scholarship. His previous contributions to MSRJ include engaging in outreach and  serving as Editing Coordinator. For 2017, he is focused on streamlining the review process and increasing submission throughput. He has a strong interest in Orthopaedic Surgery, particularly trauma. To that end, he is pursuing a year of orthopaedic trauma research at NYU in during the 2017-2018 academic year. Angelyn Thayer, M3 Executive Editor, is a third year medical student at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. She earned her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Grand Valley State University and worked as a Pediatric Critical Care nurse in Detroit before coming to medical school. She is currently working on a research project at Children’s Hospital of Michigan focusing on thrombosis prophylaxis in postoperative congenital heart disease patients. She helped to run the MSRJ elective last year, and is looking to improve communication and promote member driven initiates within the organization. While pediatric critical care remains an interest, she is also intrigued by various surgical specialties and looks forward to experiencing them during clerkships. Executive Board Alex Chavez-Yenter, Senior Editor Coordinator, is a fourth year medical student at Michigan State College of Human Medicine.  He received his BS in Human Biology and a minor in Spanish at Michigan State University in 2013.  Alex has research experience in medical anthropology exploring the use of stimulant medication and its portrayal in social media.  More recently, he participated in research on ethnic discordance and its effect on perceived quality of patient-physician encounters.  This research was presented at the MSU Flint Area Medical Education Community Research Forum in 2017.  Alex is a former Junior Editor and is currently the Senior Editor Coordinator for MSRJ.  He is interested in pursuing a career in either diagnostic or interventional radiology. Rohit Nallani, Junior Editor Coordinator, is a third year medical student in the Medical Partners in Public Health program at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. The journal has been making exciting new changes with the start of e-publication and we look forward to another productive year of publishing, editing, and supporting medical student research efforts around the world! 2016-2017 Executive Editorial Board Executive Editors James Polega, Executive Editor-in-Chief, is a fourth year medical student at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He completed a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology at Saginaw Valley State University in 2013. He has previous research experience in bariatric surgery, freshwater ecology, natural products chemistry, and antiquity metallic compositional determination. He has special interests in hematology and oncology. He plans to pursue a Med/Peds residency upon completion of medical school. Garrett Roe, Executive Editor, is a fourth year medical student at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He completed a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Neuroscience at the University of Michigan in 2013. He has previous research experience in Parkinson’s Disease which he completed while at the University of Michigan. He has special interests in neuroscience, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and sports medicine. Danny Yau, Executive Editor, is a third year medical student at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine. He completed his B.S. in Microbial Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. His previous contributions to MSRJ include the new ePublications feature. As an executive editor, he looks to further establish MSRJ’s presence in the medical research community. His current interest is in Emergency Medicine. Executive Board Mahnoor Rehman, Senior Editor Coordinator, is a fourth year medical student at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. She received her B.S. in Evolutionary Anthropology from the University of Michigan in 2013. Over the years, she has participated in research related to identifying infectious mechanisms in Legionella pneumophila, HPV vaccination rates in adolescent males in the mid-Michigan area, and background EEG patterns in patients that suffer from non-epileptic seizures. She is interested in pursuing a career in Neurology with a focus on epilepsy. Kyle Hildebrandt, Junior Editor Coordinator, is a third year medical student at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine. He completed a B.S. in Biomedical Laboratory Science with an additional major in Human Biology. He is planning on pursuing a career in Surgery, with a special interest in Orthopedics. Jason Sotzen, Treasurer, is a third year medical student at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He received a B.S. in Biochemistry and B.A. in Spanish Language & Literature from Oakland University in 2011. He has previous research experience and publications in retinal gene expression at Oakland University and hematologic malignancies at the University of Michigan. Jason is drawn to surgery and neuroscience, and plans to pursue a career as a neurological surgeon. Senior Editors Regina Matar is a fourth year medical student at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.  She graduated from the University of Michigan in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience with a Minor in Music.  She has completed research related to Carotid Artery Stenosis and Melanoma at Spectrum Health, Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease at Columbia University, and Renal Failure at the University of Michigan.  Regina is passionate about pursuing a surgical career and looks forward to furthering evidence-based medicine...

The journal has been making incredible progress and we look forward to another productive year publishing impressive article submissions and supporting medical student research around the world! 2015-2016 Executive Editorial Board Executive Editors Kaitlyn Vitale, Executive Editor-in-Chief, is a fourth year medical student at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine. She completed a B.S. in Biological Sciences with a minor in Anthropology from the University of Notre Dame in 2012. She is planning on pursuing a career in Neurology, eventually becoming involved in academic medicine. James Polega, Executive Editor, is a third year medical student at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He received a B.S. in Biology from Saginaw Valley State University. Prior to entering medical school he was an active researcher in the fields of freshwater ecology and natural products chemistry. When not busy with school he enjoys spending time with his wife. He hopes to one day specialize in Hematology/Oncology and practice in his home state of Michigan. Rama Salhi, Executive Editor, is a fourth year medical student Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 2007 with a B.S. in Microbiology and Arabic studies. She went on to complete a master’s degree in Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2010. Currently she is considering pursuing a career in academic Emergency Medicine. Senior Editors Apoorva Aekka is a third year medical student at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies—Global Environment and Health. She hopes to pursue her interests in pediatrics and global health. Toomas Arusoo is a third year medical student at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Originally from Michigan, Toomas graduated from Grand Valley State University in 2011 with a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences and Loyola University Chicago in 2013 with a M.S. in Cell and Molecular Physiology. He is interested in pursuing a career in surgery Andrew Benintende is currently a third year at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.  He graduated from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor with a B.S. in Movement Science.  Before entering medical school he taught high school science in Houston Independent School District.  He is interested in specifically working with underserved populations both in the United States and abroad. Tina Chaalan is a fourth year medical student at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine. She graduated with a B.S in Biological Sciences at the University of Michigan- Dearborn in 2012. She is interested in pursuing a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has a strong interest in women’s health and hopes to become greatly involved in research and patient education in that area. Introducing the 2014 – 2015 editorial staff for the MSRJ. This is an exciting time for our staff as another year passes and they gain more experience in the medical journal field. We’re enthusiastic about the new directions the journal is taking, the fantastic submissions we get each month, and the opportunity to help out other medical students across the world! 2014-2015 Executive Editorial Board   Executive Editors Jessica Wummel is a fourth year medical student at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine. She received her B.S. in Human Biology with a specialization in Bioethics, Humanities, and Society also from Michigan State University in 2011 from the Lyman Briggs College. She is planning on pursuing a career in Med/Peds and would eventually like to be involved in academic medicine later in her career. John “Jack” Mettler is a fourth year medical student at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine working on a combined MD/MPH degree. In 2010 he received his B.S. in Human Biology with a specialization in Bioethics, Humanities, and Society, also from Michigan State University. He is interested in pursuing either diagnostic or interventional radiology, but also remains committed to public health interests.   Senior Editors David Carr is a fourth year medical student at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.  He recieved his B.S. degree in Human Biology from Michigan State University in 2011.   He is planning on pursuing post-graduate education in pathology in an academic setting allowing incorporation of clinical practice, teaching, and research. Tina Chaalan is a third year medical student at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine. She graduated with a B.S in Biological Sciences at the University of Michigan- Dearborn in 2012. She is interested in pursuing a career in Surgery but is still keeping an open mind towards other fields. She has a great interest in public health policies and hopes to play a larger role in the public health sector later in her career. Margaret Chi is a fourth year medical student at Michigan State University.  She is from Los Angeles, California and received her Bachelor of Arts degrees in Molecular Cell Biology as well as Economics from University of California, Berkeley.  She then went on to receive a Masters degree in Public Health from the University of Southern California.  Prior to starting medical school, she worked as a Research Associate at Kaiser Permanente working on projects related to diffuse large cell lymphoma and coronary artery disease.  In her free time, she likes to travel and participate in outdoor activities.  In the future, she hopes to pursue academic medicine. Michelle A. Dwyer is a fourth year medical student at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.  She graduated from Oakland University with a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Psychology in 2011.  She is interested in pursuing a career in Family Medicine. Bobby Sahil Gambhir is a fourth year medical student at the College of Human Medicine of Michigan State University. He completed an Honors Specialization in Medical Sciences at the University of Western Ontario. He will pursue Surgery but is confident academic medicine will be pursued throughout his life.
